In platformers, the protagonist often makes all the difference. I mean, look at how cool Mario is, or how cute Sonic the Hedgehog can be. In Nimball Rewind, the protagonist is just a ball. It rolls and bonces around, but there's not much of an emotional connection there, if you know what I mean. But after all, this is a game, not a match-making service. And as a game, it's pretty darn fun!

Each level is quite short. A gripper arm drops you from the ceiling, and you need to roll and bounce until you reach your destination - a gripper arm resting face-up, that you can fall or jump into. In the screenshot you see me trying to leap into the gripper at the end of level 11. That square to the left is a "bouncer platform" (my name, not theirs). When you touch it, it launches you upwards. That can be a good thing, like here, or it can be quite bad, if the ceiling happens to be red. Red surfaces, in general, are "toxic" in this game - you're not allowed to touch them.

What happens when you do, though? This is where "time travel" comes in. Basically, rather than strike out, you can hit SPACE and rewind a bit, kind of like an Undo function [Hello, Braid... -Ed]. When you let go of the SPACE key, gameplay immediately resumes. But you don't get infinite retries, though: touch enough red walls, and eventually you'll have to start the level from the top. All in all, quite a fun platformer!

P.S: You can double-jump (jump while you're in the air). Took me a few minutes to figure that out.

Don't quote us on this, but we've got a feeling that remotes will be more than just remotes by the time 2012 rolls around. HDTV companies have been slyly adding motion support to their remotes here at CES, and with PrimeSense's technology going over so well in the Kinect, there's an obvious next-step when looking at TV control. Movea -- the company responsible for the Gyration Air Mouse and Air Mouse iOS app -- has just teamed up with Sunrex here at CES, with the newly formed relationship expecting to yield new kit based on the former's MotionIC platform and SmartMotion technology. We're told to expect the first products to be available in Q1 of this year, with the SmartMotion Air Mini Keyboard remote and SmartMotion Air Mouse being named in particular. The former includes a full four-row QWERTY keyboard and relies on 2.4GHz wireless technology, but no images, pricing and availability details are available just yet.

Most of Google's Web apps already supported SSL-encrypted connections. One which didn't was Picasa Web, though that has now changed -- you can now connect to Google's photo sharing site via https://www.picasaweb.com.

As with many other sites, though, not everything displayed on Picasa Web is encrypted. While the home page and upload form are fully encrypted, gallery pages report as being only partially encrypted. Blogger Alex Chitu reports that the culprit is, in fact, an iframe used for displaying ads on the site. That means Internet Explorer users will see mixed content warnings pop up every time they visit a gallery page via HTTPS -- other browsers are a bit more subtle with their alerts.

Clearwire's talking more about some of the glorious numbers it's seeing as it drives around the greater Phoenix area testing its trial LTE network, and we think one specific quote pretty much sums it up: "this isn't your grandfather's LTE." That statement was made in comparing Clearwire's results -- bumping up against 90Mbps in some configurations -- to the 5 to 12Mbps that Verizon is quoting for its first-gen commercial LTE network, though they're quick to note in the same breath that Clear's test is on an unloaded network without a deluge of users all trying to stream professional sports games in HD at the same time. What does that all mean for Clear's existing WiMAX deployment? The company's as noncommittal on the subject as ever, saying only that WiMAX continues to be "best for the customer" today but that "potentially in the future that could be WiMAX and LTE." Needless to say, though, they're taking the LTE option pretty seriously if they're dumping serious cash into testing it out and publishing the results. Follow the break for Clear's teaser footage -- wouldn't you like access to this action?

We've certainly seen our fair share of 4G devices in the Las Vegas sun (well, convention center) this year, but as you might have guessed, a recent study finds that increased awareness does not necessarily equal increased understanding. As the Nielsen Company recently discovered, the majority (54 percent) of consumers who know or care about 4G were relying on the old International Telecommunications Union definition of mobile data speeds over 100 Mb/s, even though carriers have sort of been making up their own rules (for instance, T-Mobile and AT&T are calling their HSPA+ networks 4G). And what to make of the large percentage of people who think that 4G somehow refers to the iPhone 4? That one's a perpetual head-scratcher. But in the end, the study finds that none of that really matters: almost three in ten consumers are gearing up to buy a 4G device within the next twelve months. And \that's what really matters, right?

There are quite a few homescreen app launchers for Android; the best-known ones, ADW and LauncherPro, are very powerful but tend to be a tad on the chunky side. When you're in the middle of doing something and need to quickly switch to another task, you may not always like to go via your cluttered homescreen.

Enter QuickDesk: this quick utility is basically like a single homescreen page, with widget support and all. But when you launch it, it pops up as an overlay on top of what you're doing. The screenshot to the right shows QuickDesk running on top of a browser session, for example, but you could run it from any application; all it takes is a quick double-tap of the Home button (or even a single tap, with a double-tap to launch your "regular" launcher app). Those indicators you see next to PicMe, Phone and the other apps means they're currently running in the background.

Within QuickDesk, you get single-tap access to your most frequent applications and widgets. For example, I placed the power management widget there so I can quickly switch Wi-Fi off from any app - useful when I'm out and about, in the middle of something, and suddenly realize Wi-Fi is on and sucking battery power.

QuickDesk also features an "app drawer" of sorts, showing your most recently used applications. I personally disabled that feature (that's why you don't see it in the screenshot) because I feel the implementation clashes with the homescreen design - when the app drawer is open, some of the homescreen slides "up" and out of view. Still, QuickDesk is an interesting launcher, and the free version doesn't appear crippled in any way. QR code is after the jump.

The concept of reading literature -- except for technical documentation -- on a computer screen has come a long way in the last few years. No doubt the growing popularity of EBRs, or electronic-book readers such as the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook are having a big impact on our reading habits.
